COMP 206 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Single Unix Specification, Multics, Bell Labs
Document Summary
Software systems, by joseph vybihal & danielle azar. Unix developers targeted a very simplistic os and they got it: the kernel"s job is to manage memory/data organization, process execution and communication across its software/hardware. It is found in the ram of the computer: serving as the interface between the user and the more complicated. Information is organized into files and directories, with the base" directory being the root. All the following directories are found directly beneath root. /bin contains all utility software and programs common to all users. /etc stores admin files (password files, for example) /usr stores all the new" user information, that wasn"t there upon. Any files beginning with a period are hidden files". They are hidden to discourage any fiddling with them by less-experienced users: utilities has two main sections: /bin programs that perform additional os operations, c programs (ftp, rlogin)
