First accounts of hottentot religion in content of european exploration before 1650s: reports denied any hottentot religion. 1652: dutch colony created in cape; reports said hottentot had religion; moon worship. 1680s: dutch colony expanded; conflict over land/ livestock; hottentots said to have no religion. 1700s: cape region under dutch control; hottentot had natural but not revealed religion. 1713: smallpox and cattle disease for hottentot; many died; europeans said they had a religion. Hottentots reported to have no religion by all europeans. Also seen as lacking basic human features, less than human, animalistic/bestial. Sometimes, denial of religion seen as an absence of christian doctrines and practices this served to deny hottentot religion and produce a christian construction of religion. Christianity also played role in genealogy and morphology. Hottentots located in terms of biblical chronology as descendants of noah also efforts to make sense of hottentot practices in terms of biblical analogy.
