Cannot escape id; fear of danger arising from within self. Defense mechanisms: an ego protecting strategy to hide threats from self/reduce. Arises from the conscience of the superego; the stronger the ego the more anxiety. Not a fear of social punishment, but based on conscience and guilt reality anxiety: arises from threat or danger in the world (ie fail an exam); rooted in reality. Neurotic anxiety: unconscious fear that your id impulses will get out of control; fear of punishment. Moral anxiety: fear when violating moral codes; moral anxiety is felt as guilt or shame. Anxiety: an aversive inner state that people seek to avoid or escape; to freud, it was a warning sign to the ego. The ego responds to anxiety in 2 ways : increases rational problem solving coping efforts; consciously trying to deal with the threat works best for reality anxiety anxiety; they operate unconsciously and distort reality in some way.
