Concern implies the existence of needs and motives behind our thoughts and actions. Henry murray: father of motive view;human behaviour is best described as a reflection of needs. A need : an internal directional force that determines how people respond to the environment --- need is an internal state that is dissatisfactory, lacking an element of well-being. Murray believed that even psychological motives have biological roots. Biology is a model for how needs work: biological needs need to be satisfied repeatedly-intensifies with time (ie hunger). The strength of the need influences behaviour (positively correlated); the stronger the need, the sooner action occurs. The need that is greatest is reflected in behaviour. Needs are directive: 1) they determine which of many actions occur (they are specific ie need water ); they pertain to goal objects or events and 2) they specify movement towards or away closer to behaviour. A motive: needs operate through motives; motives take the underlying need and move.
