Document Summary
Temperament: a stable disposition across situations, whichis biologically based. Thomas and chess followed infants into adulthood using parental interviews and stranger observation. Assessed a) activity: motor activity level and b) persistence: the amount of time the infant devoted to a task when obstacles were faced. Developed three categories: most were easy babies, a few were difficult, and the rest were slow to warm up (a mix) Surgency/extraversion: refers to the extent to which a child is generally happy, active and seeks stimulation responses. Rothenbart hypothesized that the domains reflect adult personality and are correlated (ie an easy baby would be high-low- high) Should appear cross culturally if temperament is biologically based: the structure of temperament and the correlations were found in both russia and north america using an infant behaviour questionnaire. Important theme of temperament research: a childs environment should match their temperament: ie outgoing babies will naturally explore, but parents may have to introduce an unfamiliarbaby.
