Can occur because individuals want them too, or they can happen spontaneously without conscious effort. Males engage in it more than females do: more likely to fantasize about forcing women into sexual activity. Women are more likely to fantasize about being murdered: more likely to have fantasies while ovulating. In judeo-christian tradition, masturbation was condemned as sinful seen as a nonprocreative sexual act. There is no evidence that masturbation is harmful. Incidence of masturbation is greater among men than women. Men who had more frequent sexual activity had lower masturbation rates, but women who had more frequent sexual activity. Both men and women with same sex partners masturbate more than those with other gender partners. People with more education masturbate more frequently.
