Papillae: are bumps on the surface of our tongue. Each papilla has one to several hundred taste buds. East taste bud has 50-150 taste receptors. You have around 2000-5000 taste buds but some people have as feq as 500 or as many as 20,000. Higher taste buds = super taster sweet and sour taste really sweet and sour. Four basic tastes: (give or take one) Proof that our reactions to taste are advantageous. Miracle berries: modify sour tastes to taste sweet. Why does orange juice taste so bad after brushing teeth? toothpaste has sodium lauryl sulfate in it and it intensifies the reaction to sour taste and reduces the sweet receptors. Distinguish what is good food or not good food. Things that have gone bad, spoiled, bacteria and poisons. Saltiness: salt sensitive taste cells have a na+ selective channel. The influx of na+ causes a depolarization. Sourness: food taste sour because of their acidity.
