PSYC-1105EL Chapter Notes - Chapter 14.2: Adrenal Medulla, Sympathetic Nervous System, Adrenal Gland
Document Summary
Stress is a psychological and physiological reaction that occurs when perceived demands exceed existing resources to meet those demands. Stress refers to both events (stressors) and experiences in response to those events (the stress response) Appraisal refers to the cognitive act of assessing and evaluating the potential threat and demands of an event. First, the individual perceives a potential threat and begins the primary appraisal by asking whether or not this is a threat, which can be physical (ex. Someone trying to hurt you) or psychosocial (ex. Trying to study for two exams on the same day or trying to deal with interpersonal conflicts) Secondary appraisal is determining how to cope with the threat. In the workplace, canadians experience stress due to long hours, high work demands, safety concerns, and interpersonal relationships. Life changes such as marital difficulties, the birth of a child, or the death of a family member are also a major source of stress.
