Assessment of Cardiorespiratory Fitness 12:17
Don’t have to memorize calculations
VO2 Max
Plateau of VO2 (Max)
O2 consumption plateaus even with increasing exercise intensities
Can increase with training for 8-12 weeks
VO2 peak = highest VO2 level reached
VO2 linearly related to Cardiac Output
2 ways to look at it:
absolute – directly related to body size
useful for non-weight bearing activities (ex. Cycling)
relative – take weight into account
easier to compare between people
useful for weight bearing activities
both of these key for comparing VO2 levels between individuals based on
activities they are performing
*Table 4.1*
categorize clients based on this table and their test results
ALWAYS keep this table around/close to you (very useful)
Good = medium range
Graded Exercise Tests (GXT)

Assessment of Cardiorespiratory Fitness 12:17
Different protocols for submax or max tests
Can use submax tests to estimate max values (ex. VO2 max values)
Homeostatic Failure (Catastrophic) Model of Human Exercise Physiology
Fatigue results from a failure to maintain homeostasis either in active
muscles or CNS
Working the body to the point of failure
Maximal definitions on slideshow*
The results of a VO2 max test provide a unique window on many
physiological limits
Administration of a GXT
Red stuff on slide = important things to make sure have done
RPE = rate of perceived exertion
Why take this?
Monitor body and has linear relation with VO2
Might indicate something wrong with the individual (cardiovascular event)
Indicate if need to stop test if have non-normal results (non-linear)
Recovery
Indicator of muscle health and recovery mechanisms
Make sure subject is okay and take notes for self
Are they recovering properly?
Fastest recover = fitter someone is
Red/yellow things on slide = stop test right away
