People differ widely in their responses to sensory deprivation: extroverts and low sensation seekers tend to have more adaptive responses to sensory deprivation. Initially, zuckerman attributed individual differences in sensation seeking to levels of arousal: high sensation seekers being below the optimal level of arousal, low sensation seekers are already over stimulated so they do not enjoy additional stimulation. Sensation seeking predicts high-risk behaviour such as engaging in risky sexual activities. Coping differences reflect differences in how people appraise stressful situations cognitively. Richard lazarus and susan folkman: made the key distinction between primary appraisal and secondary appraisal: individual differences may exist with both types of appraisals. Primary appraisals: involve assessing whether the event is a threat or a challenge. Secondary appraisals: a personal evaluation of whether the person feels that he or she has the ability to cope with the event.
