These subtypes were dropped in the dsm-5 because these behaviors may change over the course of the disorder. It is estimated that 0. 2 to 1. 5 percent of the general population has schizophrenia. The disorder is equally shared between males and females. Life expectancy for the people with schizophrenia is shorter due to suicide or accidents caused by their behaviors, but also because of obesity, smoking, angina, and respiratory problems. The onset of the disorder diminishes with age. In males schizophrenia can develop even after 75 years of age. In woman it can develop after age 36. Up to 85 percent who later develop schizophrenia go through a prodromal stage, which is a 1 to 2 year period when less severe yet unusual behaviors occur. The behaviors are the ones described by schizotypal disorder.
