Three major approaches: psychological treatments: psychodynamic, humanistic, behavioural, cognitive, biological treatments: drug therapy, psychosurgery, electric and magnetic, combined treatments: drugs + psychotherapy, integrative therapies, behavioural, group therapies mindfulness + psychotherapy. Restructuring thoughts, loosening client"s belief in irrational thoughts and offering incentives for acquiring more adaptive thought and behaviour patterns: encourages reappraisal, re-examining a stressful situation, has been successfully applied to; depression, phobias, ptsd, Disorders are symptoms of unconscious and repressed thoughts, feelings and motives. Work to uncover repressed thoughts, feelings and motives (defense mechanisms) Changes reinforcers and rewards to change maladaptive behaviour. Maladaptive behaviours have been reinforced and irrational thoughts have developed. Facilitate group supports and sense of community so person realizes he or she is not alone. Classical and operant conditioning; token economies; systemic desensitization. Restructure thoughts and offer incentives for acquiring more adaptive thoughts and behaviours; reappraisal. Drug therapies: everything from mild anxiety to schizophrenia. Effective in managing symptoms but not curing disorders.
