Transcription is a pivatal point in whether or not a gene is expressed, especially in prokaryotic cells. In eukaryotes, transcription occurs in the nucleus while translation occurs in the cytoplasm. However, prokaryotes don"t have a nucleus, so both translation and transcription occur simultaneously. Instead of each of them having their own promoter, they all share one promoter, so when initiation occurs, they all begin transcription simultaneously and coordinately regulated from a single promoter which is called an operon. This is a very efficient way of controlling gene transcription and gene expression. All of the polypeptides in the same metabolic pathways. Therefore the function of the metabolic pathway is needed so that all of these genes can be stimulated by the same promoter.
