Interthalamic adhesion (intermediate mass) - bridge of gray matter that joins the right and left halves of the thalamus in about 70% of human brains. Functions in emotions, regulation of alertness, and memory: medial nuclei, connects to cerebral cortex, limbic system, and basal nuclei. Functions in emotions, learning, memory, awareness, and cognition (thinking and knowing) Lateral group: nuclei connect to the superior colliculi, limbic system, and cortex in all lobes of the cerebrum. Lateral dorsal nucleus functions in the expression of emotions. Lateral geniculate nucleus relays visual impulses for sight from retina to primary visual area of the cerebral cortex: medial geniculate nucleus relays auditory impulses for hearing from the ear to the primary auditory area of the cerebral cortex. Lie within internal medullary lamina and make connections with reticular formation, cerebellum, basal nuclei, and wide areas of the cerebral cortex. Function in pain perception, integration of sensory and motor information, and arousal: midline nucleus.
