Chapter 18 - spinal cord and spinal nerves. Nervous tissue of central nervous system is very delicate, and does not respond well to injury or damage. Surrounding and protecting the delicate nervous tissue of the spinal cord are: vertebral column (first layer of protection) Provide a sturdy shelter for the enclosed spinal cord. Provide additional protection: three spinal meninges (second layer of protection) Protective connective tissue coverings that encircle the spinal cord and brain. Arachnoid mater and pia mater are often referred to collectively as the leptomeninges. Between these two meninges, is a space - the subarachnoid space, which contains the shock absorbing cerebrospinal fluid. Forms a sac from the level of the foramen magnum to the occipital bone - continuous with meningeal dura mater of the brain, to second sacral vertebra. It extends from the level of the foramen magnum to the second sacral vertebra where it is close-ended.
