Document Summary

A joint or articulation is a point of contact between neighboring bones, between cartilage and bones, or between teeth and bones. Different types of joints permit different degrees of movement: synarthrosis - immovable joint, amphiarthrosis - slightly moveable joint, diarthrosis - freely moveable joint. Comes in a variety of shapes and permits different types of movements. Bones are either held together by solid masses of connective tissue, or joined by a connective tissue capsule that surrounds a lubricated cavity. The more mobile joints are less stable: highly mobile shoulder joint is the least stable joint in the body - reason why it"s the most commonly dislocated joints. Ligament - dense irregular or dense regular connective tissue that binds one bone to another. Based on presence or absence of a joint (synovial) cavity and the type of connective tissue that binds the bones together, the structural classification of joints categorizes joints into three major families: fibrous joints.
