Document Summary

At festivals meat would be distributed to all. This was often only time poor had meat. Some members of the community were arguing that: Idols were not real, only god was real. Therefore meat sacrificed to idols was being sacrificed to nothing. Consequently, there is no harm in eating it. But argues that others (those weaker in knowledge) will not understand and may be led astray. He also argues that though the idols are not real, they represent demons. One cannot partake of the table of demons and the table of the lord. Paul developed a theology of why gentiles did not need to follow the torah. This is found in his letters to the galatians and the romans. This is his argument of faith versus works. This opposition pits belief in jesus and his teaching (faith) against the torah (works) This in turn sets up the later division of christianity versus judaism.
