PSYC 420 Chapter Notes - Chapter 12: Introspection Illusion, Magical Thinking, Headache
Document Summary
Introspection illusion disproportionate weighting of introspective info when assessing oneself, but not others. Prob: ppl don"t have conscious access to much of the info that they would require to gain self- understanding. Ppl"s lack of appreciation for that fact about themselves. Rely on introspection comes at cost of not paying attention to beh. Things we think we know about ourselves that are not true. Note that in the second paragraph of this section, the authors are describing the poor correlation between self-perceived ability and actual ability. This means that people are poor at knowing their own ability: some people think they do not have ability when they do, and others exaggerate their ability. As such, poor accuracy of self-perceptions is not just about self- enhancement. I just wanted to clarify this point to avoid confusion. In the first paragraph, the authors talk about the role of intentions in unrealistic optimism. You should be familiar with the issue they raise.
