Anatomical reference pointing toward the rat"s nose is anterior or rostral. Direction pointing towards the rat"s tail is posterior or caudal. Top side of spinal cord is dorsal side. Right side of the brain and spinal cord is mirror image on left side: bilateral symmetry. Invisible line running down the middle of the nervous system: midline. Structures farther away from the midline are lateral. Two structures that are on the same side: ipsilateral to each other. Approach to make cuts parallel to one of the 3 anatomical planes of section. The plan of the section resulting from splitting the brain into equal right and left halves: midsagit. Sections parallel to the midsagittal plane are in the sagittal plane. Horizontal sections split the brain into dorsal and ventral parts. Coronal place: perpendicular to the ground and to the sagittal place. Coronal plane splits the brain into anterior and posterior. 3 parts that are common to all mammals: cerebrum, cerebellum, brain stem.
