The evolution of organization theory and design: way of thinking - the way we see and think about organization theory is based on patterns and regularities in organizational design and behaviour. These insights helped to establish organizational assumptions that the role of management is to maintain stability and e ciency, with top managers doing the thinking and workers doing what they are told. Administrative principles looked at the design and functioning of the organization as a whole - unity of demand - unity of direction. Hawthorne studies - positive treatment of employees improved their motivation and productivity. Hierarchical systems and bureaucratic approaches that developed during the industrial revolution remained the primary approach to organizational design and functioning well into the 1970s and 80s. Worked well, until it started to lead to problems - increased competition, which changed the playing eld. #1: coping with rapid change is the most common problem facing managers and organizations.
