It consists of the heart, the blood vessels and the respiratory system (air passages, trachea, bronchi and lungs). The cardiorespiratory system circulates blood through the body transporting oxygen, nutrients and other key substances to the organs and tissues that need them. It also carries away waste products so they can be used or expelled. The heart: the heart is a four0chambered, fist sized muscle located beneath the ribs and under the breastbone. Its role is to pump oxygen poor blood to the lungs and oxygen rich blood to the rest of the body. Blood pressure: force exerted by blood on the walls of the blood vessels is created by the pumping action of the heart.
