Professions in the present sense were absent in the ancient world. This, lawyers and doctors were often not recognized as professions. A professional was a person who professed his/her faith publicly. Thus, there is a religious origin to the word profession. Professions were organized in two groups: religious orders, and secular guilds. Exclusive organizations created to preserve rights and privileges of membership. Guild associations received authority from kings, city hall or clergy. Craft guilds - groups of craftsmen involved in same profession: bakers, cobblers, carpenters, masons, etc. Guilds located in cities and so separate from rural exploitation. Guilds provided a way of upward movement in status/wealth. Guilds ensured that members were responsible for their work while offering services to those members of the guild. Forbade advertising regulated prices exerted monopoly control limited number of masters. Supported dependents of members in case of death. Craftsmen: owned businesses that produced goods or services. Apprentices: worked for craftsmen to learn the craft.
