Document Summary

Interpretation of the information we get from our 5 senses, which is used to make sense of our environment. All of which provide info about a target. The perceiver"s experiences, needs and emotions can affect their perception of a target. If you have been bitten by a dog, your emotions when you see a dog are different than someone who has never been bitten. The situation and context affect our perception of the target. A hooded man walking down a sunny street at 11am is interpreted differently than a hooded man walking towards us in a deserted alley at 2am. The target can also be interpreted in many ways. Biases (eg racism and sexism) can make us view targets in inaccurate ways. Social identity theory states that people form perceptions of themselves based on 2 things: Personal characteristics (smart, attractive, horseback rider and lawyer) form our personal identity.
