SOCI 3005 Chapter Notes - Chapter 21: Relyon
Document Summary
Discipline and punish: the birth of the prison (new york: pantheon, 1978). This is the first time in the book that foucault brings the prison system to the center of attention. The prison system has eventually come to development through several reforms that had been discussed in the previous chapter. It had come into existence after carefully examining all possibilities for penalty, but most importantly, it had come into existence because it was considered a humane way of punishment. The prison system today, has become so ingrained in our society, that it is hard to imagine a world without one. All of us pride in our liberties, in our freedom, and that is why we believe there is no stricter punishment than taking someone else liberty away. However, the prison system does not only play the part of punishing the guilty ones, it has to play a more important role of transforming the corrupt individual.
