Sociology can help us better understand our own historical context and the complexities of life in the 21st century: three revolutions: Following the pioneering work of sociologist emile durkheim, functionalism is widely considered to be the first major theoretical tradition in sociology. Views that relatively stable patterns of social relations (social structures) govern human relations. Concerned with how social structures maintain or undermine social stability. Social structures are based on shared values. Attributes social problems to the failure of institutions to fulfill their intended functions during times of rapid change. Macro-sociological approach: studies social institutions and larger groups in society: durkheim & disciplinary legitimization. Classi(cid:272) tud(cid:455): e(cid:373)ile du(cid:396)khei(cid:373)(cid:859)s suicide (1897) a systematic analysis of suicide rates in different localities and groups; found that degree of social solidarity was the leading factor (as opposed to degree of mental disturbance) Considers roles expected behaviour of an individual in a social position and the duties associated with their position.
