Readings - jan 9 & 11 - religion: some basics pg 1-22. The events of 9/11 in 2001 made it clear that religion is part and parcel of the unfolding of twenty-first century history. The (cid:272)o(cid:374)te(cid:373)porary (cid:449)orld is shaped (cid:271)y religio(cid:374)s: the (cid:858)(cid:449)ar o(cid:374) terror(cid:859), i(cid:374)tellige(cid:374)t desig(cid:374), a(cid:271)ortio(cid:374) (cid:272)li(cid:374)i(cid:272) killings, waco, conflicts and wars in the middle east, india, former yugoslavia, northern ireland, the. Jonestown mass suicides, environmental summits, peace demonstrations the list goes on. This approa(cid:272)h is (cid:271)ased o(cid:374) a si(cid:373)ple (cid:271)ut profou(cid:374)d poi(cid:374)t: that (cid:449)hat (cid:449)e (cid:272)all (cid:858)religio(cid:374)(cid:859) is so(cid:373)ethi(cid:374)g that humans do, and so the study of religion is primarily concerned with people and cultures. It is for this reason that we can talk about religion and culture. In many ways we can regard both of these as separate and distinct, but they also overlap and have an impact on each other.
