How people focus on details in any context despite clutter of background information. Rod and frame test: in a dark room, participants are presented with a rod with a frame around it. The goal is to adjust the rod so that it is upright. Field independence: ignoring the external cues around rod and use body orientation as guide. Field dependence: adjust rod in the direction of the tilted frame. Embedded figures test: participants are shown an image with multiple embedded images and are asked to find them.
