PSYC 2301 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1-3: Ex Post Facto Law, Angina Pectoris, Humorism
Document Summary
Adoption studies: compare traits of adopted children with their natural and adoptive parents to determine whether a factor is hereditary or environmental. Interdisciplinary membership (findings come from a wide variety of fields) and growth from behaviourism (behaviour is a result of operant or classical conditioning). Reveals an important link between the mind and body. Application of mainly operant and classical conditioning to change behaviour (ex. Accidents in high risk work were reduced through application of safe work practices). Biomedical model: proposes that all diseases or physical disorders can be explained by disturbances in physiological processes resulting from injury, biochemical imbalances, bacterial or viral infection etc. Assumes that disease is an affliction of the body and is separate from the mind. Biopsychosocial model: expansion of the medical view by adding biological factor connections to psychological and social factors. The new model proposes that all three factors affect and are affected by the person"s health.
