Had some subjects smoke low-nicotine cigarettes on week and high- nicotine cigarettes another. Long-term quitters still crave and many return to smoking. Nicotine constricts blood vessels and increases heart rate, cardiac output, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure which causes damage and leads to atherosclerosis. People tend to match drinking patterns with those they are with. Positive reinforcement: liking the taste of the drink, or the feeling of a buzz, help with social factors. Plays a much stronger role when abuse begins before age 25. Families with a history of alcoholism tend to build a tolerance to alcohol. People with specific gene patterns tend to crave alcohol more undesirable effects when drinking. This gene pattern causes alcohol to seem more rewarding. Some gene patterns protect against alcoholism by causing: heavy drinking can cause health issues, fetal alcohol syndrome: impaired nervous system development and cognitive and physical defects in children who"s mothers drank while they were pregnant.
