Prior to the 18th century most conceptions of abnormal behaviour were based on superstition (possessed by demons, to be witches, or victims of gods punishment) Critics of the medical model say it could pin potentially derogatory labels on people. Stigmatization of mental disorders has remained stable or perhaps even increased.
