In chapter 1, we learned that psychology is a scientific enterprise in which format research methods are employed in an attempt to answer such questions: different questions about psychology may call for different types of research strategies, if we were interested in meaning , we would adopt a qualitative research method, qualitative researchers let the meanings assigned to the experience emerge from the day they collect, their data often consist of words and narratives of experiences, 1 common use of this method is in research designed to examine the process of psychotherapy, quantitative methods are deigned primarily to examine cause and effect relationships where variables may be defined ahead of time, and where the data are numerical, quantitative research involves empirical observations of the world reported as numeric quantities, scientists believe that they understand events when they can explain the reasons for the occurrence of the events, we construct theories to better understand behavior, all scientific theories must be testable.
