Reading #1: the effects of childhood maltreatment on brain structure, function and. There are sensitive/critical periods during brain development -these periods occur possibly when gabaergic inhibitions balance out the excitatory influences. Plasticity of parts of the brain required for development of specific attributes (eg understanding language) is decreased when critical periods close making it harder to obtain these attributes after the critical period. Looks at effects of physical, sexual and emotional abuse involving emotional and physical neglect. Definition of emotional maltreatment: intentionally inflicting feelings of guilt shame or feel to serve the emotional needs of the perpetrator (examples: watching interparental violence) Adverse childhood experiences (ace"s) study - exposure to 1+ maltreatment-related. Ace lead to; increased risk for depression, suicide attempts and increased addiction. Exposure to 5+ lead to increased prescriptions being created (e. g. antidepressants, antipsychotics etc. ) Exposure to 6+ lead to a reduction in lifespan. Maltreatment acts as a stressor which affects both the body and the brain.
