Motion can be literal and concrete or very lyrical and stylized, like images can. Ex: very stylized = performers in a musical. Movements can symbolize things, especially in formalistic films. Ballet and mime are both very stylized examples. Camera movement has an effect also, can be very symbolistic. Ex: vertical and upward movements seem soaring and free because they mimic the eye"s natural tendency to move upwards. Western eye tends to read pictures left to right, this can either be conformed to or gone against in film and camera movements both would have a reason. Before the 1920s filmmakers mostly confined movements to the subject that was being photographed. Few of them moved their cameras during a shot and if they did it was usually to keep a moving person in frame. In the 20s german filmmakers started to move the camera within the shot for psychological and thematic reasons.
