I(cid:374) hi(cid:396)s(cid:272)hi"s theory, social bonds include attachment, commitment, involvement and belief: without socially regulated goals, deviance is more likely, as people pursue their aspirations without check. Thrasher and the gang: located gangs both geographically and socially where there are breaks in the structure of social organization, gangs arise spontaneously in areas where social controls are weak. Shaw and mckay- ecological analysis: saw deviance originating not only in the pathology of individuals but rather in the social disorganization of communities. Study of chicago neighbourhoods: crime rates were highest in slum areas near the city and centre and generally declined as one moved outward. Control theory disappeared from the scene despite its promising beginning: the most important reason was that early research was methodologically flawed.
