BUSI 4404 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Frame Relay, Extranet, Public Switched Telephone Network
Document Summary
Wide area networks (wans) : run long distances connecting different buildings or offices and usually leased. Common carriers : private companies that provide communication services to the public. Dedicated-circuit networks : use full duplex circuits from common carriers called leased lines or private lines to create point-to-point links between organizational locations. Channel service/data service unit : takes the outgoing packet and translates it to use the data link layer and network protocols in the wan. Local exchange carrier(lec) : common carrier that provides local communication services. Interchange carrier (ixc) : common carrier that provides long-distance communication service. Ring architecture : messages take longer to travel but can still function with loss of 1 circuit. Star architecture : simple mgmt of messages, messages travel quicker but not good for high traffic and failure of central site will stop network. Mesh architecture : shorter routes for messages, can handle high traffic and can still function after circuit loss.
