ANTH 4730 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Sumit Sarkar, Derek Gregory, Chessboard
Document Summary
This chapter focuses on the formation of afghanistan as a state, which has been used by many for their own personal gains. The people of afghanistan and its rulers are considered as pawns in a chessboard, which are used by external states such as united. States, pakistan, and saudi arabia to further their own motives. The growing conflict between the two ideologies of marxism and radical islamization shattered the landscape of afghanistan, severely ruining the lives of its civilians who were caught in between this conflict. However, the external powers that wished to gain control of the region without directly intervening gave birth to new enemies, which sought to bite the hand that it was fed by. The combined power of taliban and al-qaeda stopped all activities that were remotely associated with the modern society, and slowly started building a powerful breeding ground for transnational terrorists.
