Document Summary

Intercollegiate athletics chapter 8 notes- november 3, 2016. College athletics began as recreation athletics organized by students to meet their desire for both physical and social activities. Started with rowing being the first competitive sport, the next was baseball and then soon after came football. Administrators were not involved at the time but they were concerned about the unproductive nature of athletics, contests, and significant resistance was voiced against the emerging popularity or intercollegiate athletics. Eventually college presidents and their inner circles realized successful sport teams could generate additional resources for their institutions, as well as draw both political favour and alumni support. First started out in chicago and the big ten was made and then other regions met up and did the same. Iaaus and ciau- central were both run by faculty members of the school. Both were eventually changed to the ncaa and cis now called u-sports.
