OBHR 2P91 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Ageism, Stereotype Threat, Performance Appraisal
Document Summary
Define perception and discuss some of the general factors that influence perception. Perception is the process of interpreting the messages of our senses to provide order and meaning to the environment. Perception helps sort out and organize the complex and varied input received by our senses of sight, smell, touch, taste and hearing. The key word is interpreting because people frequently base their actions on the interpretation of reality that their perceptual system provides rather than on reality itself. Perception has three components whereby each of these components influences the perceiver"s impression or interpretation of the target: The perceiver"s experience, needs, and emotions can affect his or her perceptions of a target: experience: one of the most important characteristics of the perceiver that influences his impressions of a target is experience. In some cases, our perceptual system serves to defend us against unpleasant emotions. Perceptual defence is the tendency for the perceptual system to defend the perceiver against unpleasant emotions.
