Simultaneous bilinguals: exposed to 2 languages from birth. Sequential bilinguals: begin language development as monolingual speakers but acquire a second language later in childhood. Heritage language: language of the culture in which a child is born. Minority language: in the larger culture; its not the language used in government, business, or school. Achievement gap: the difference in academic achievement between groups (ex. monolingual vs bilingual kids) Language differentiation: the task faced by kids growing up exposed to 2 or more languages to figure out that they are hearing 2 different languages rather than one language that is some combination of both. Interlanguage: a systematic and rule governed system but its not the same systematic and rule governed system as the target form of the new language. Language transfer errors: errors that reflect the influence of the old language on the new one. Academic language: refers to the style of language used in schooling.
