Ling 3p61 chapter 1: intro to study of language development. Phonology: sounds and sound system of a language. Morphology: system for combining units of meaning (words and parts of words like ed) Pragmatics: use of language to serve communicative functions. At year 2, produce first words and increase vocab to 300 words (vocab development mostly); articulation ability goes up; more communicative. At year 3, increasing mastery of the grammar; produce 2 or 3 word sentences lacking endings, by the end they produce full sentences. At 3-4 years, they refine and develop the skills already in place; start to produce multiclause sentences. Behaviourism: change in behavior occurs in response to the consequences of prior behavior. Cognitivism: we cannot understand behavior without understanding what is going on inside the mind of the organism producing the behavior. Cognitive science: it"s necessary to understand how the mind works in order to explain human behavior, but they don"t agree on how the mind works.
