Development involves change that must be cumulative and systematic. 3 criteria before change can be considered development. Change must be orderly- not random fluctuations of behaviour. Change must result in a consistent modification in behaviour. Change must contribute to a higher level of functioning in the individual. Quantitative: increase in height, weight, creativity, activity, and vocabulary. Qualitative: maturity and integration of complex physiological and psychological processes. Concept that children develop at different rates (creating variations) Females mature faster than males, and african americans mature faster than whites (p. 46) Cephalocaudal development is the progression of body control from the head to the lower parts of the body. Proximodistal development describes progress from the central portions of the body to the distal or peripheral parts. During sensitive or critical periods a child must receive specific stimuli in specific conditions to develop normally. Hereditary is the characteristics passed down from parents to children.
