Chapter 28 - the assessment of suspected substance use disorders. Substance use patterns: these should be identified in the assessment phase but the assessor should identify ground on which the clients self-report is or is not assumed to be accurate. It is not uncommon for client to proudly boast that it is only when they use drugs that they get into trouble so continued use is not a problem. Past treatment history: first time patient for auds have significantly different alcohol use histories than do those being admitted to treatment for the second or third time. Legal history: court records reveal, the nature of legal charges brought against the client in the past, their disposition, the nature of any current changes pending against the client. Is important to keep in mind that original charges may have been reduced through pleas negotiations.
