Document Summary

Psych 1b week 2 social psychology pre-reading ch 11, pg 612-640. Interpersonal attraction; whether you like someone or not depends partly on situational factors and partly on personal characteristics. Factors that lead to initial attraction: environment (physical proximity) As long as you don"t initially dislike a person, your liking for that person will increase with additional contact. Study = students were seated together in a classroom and a year later, rated how much they liked every person in the class. Ratings showed higher liking for students sitting next to one another or in the same row. Proximity phenomenon = we tend to like people who resemble those who have often been near us. Mere-exposure effect = all else being equal, we develop a greater liking for a new object the more often we are exposed to it: similarity. We tend to like people we perceive as similar to us (age, religion, smoking habits, drinking habits, attitudes etc).
