Lab Safety and Notebook Review
I. Lab Safety Rules
A. Lab Safety Rules
1. Don’t go into the lab unless an instructor is there
2. Wear OSHA (occupational safety and health administration) safety goggles at all
times
3. No food or drink in the lab (can store in “clean area”
a. Don’t chew gum, smoke, eat, or put any objects in your mouth
4. Side bench as a desk, all bags under and out of aisle, no chemicals or glassware on
the side bench
a. Perform all experiments in the fume hood
5. Leave cell phone and other electronics off
6. Know the location of safety shower, eyewash fountain, fire extinguishers, MSDS
(material safety data sheet), lab phone, fire procedure, and evacuation route
a. Showers and eyewashes are to be used immediately in the event of a chemical
spill in the eye or over large part of the body, eye washing for at least 15 mins
with eyelids open, report all injuries/accidents to TA
7. Wear gloves if you have open wound on hand
8. Clean up all spills immediately, many hazardous chemicals are colorless be careful,
tell TA to make sure proper spill kit is used
9. Follow chemical disposal instructions and keep waste bottles capped when not in use
10. Place broken glass or sharp objects in the broken glass bin (using brush and dust pan),
and needles/razors into sharp object container (LS144)
a. Clean up broken glassware with brush and dust-pan, rinse the broken glassware if
it has chemicals
11. Wash and wipe down work area, turn off all gas and water at the end of lab period,
return all reagents/special equipment, and lock the lab drawer
12. If fire alarm: turn of burners, water, hot plate, exit via fire routes with TA
B. Lab Attire
1. Shoulders, torso, legs, and feet are covered (socks and closed toed shoes)
2. Goggles worn at all times
3. Waist of shirt must cover torso, pant legs must come down to ankle, no leggings or
tights
C. Handling Chemicals
1. Understand all the chemicals being used, refer to MSDS if necessary
2. Never touch or taste chemicals, rinse completely if small spills on hand
3. Never directly smell vapor/gas, if you want to smell use hand to bring small amount
(waft)
4. Wear disposable gloves to clean up spills/handle toxic chemicals, change
contaminated gloves, never wear gloves out of the lab
5. Always label containers to avoid confusion, only use provided spatulas for reagent
containers
6. Always add the denser or more concentrated solution to the less dense/concentrated
solution (ie- add acid to water)
a. When mixing a solid and a liquid, add the solid to the liquid (unless directed in
procedure)
