Every job falls into one of four types of economic sectors
Each sector produces different things and values
Four economic sectors
1. Primary sector
a. Extracting or harvesting natural resources
b. If you manipulate earth you grab it off earth
c. Farming, livestock, fishing, forestry (cut trees), mining, coal zinc, copper iron,
fossil fuels
d. Raw stuff is not worth much unless you do something to it

2. Secondary
a. Processing and manufacturing sector
b. Refining , taking raw commodity and make it better

3. Tertiary
a. Service sector: use things from primary and a lot from secondary and they do
something that provides service which makes it more valuable
b. Contractor (builds house) arranges for all equipment which were already made
and he arranges them to be put together for you into a house
c. He providing a service, arranging for activities to happen
d. A LOT OF VALUE
e. Trying on clothes providing service so goods are given
4. Quaternary
a. Prospect of profit
b. Astronauts information creation
c. Information sector
d. Archaeologists
e. Research scientist
f. Computer programmer
g. Analyst
h. Newspaper editors
i. Don’t provide finished good or direct service but creating or modifying info
which then in turn used by variety of industries
j. The rich ones have quaternary jobs
k. Advanced and highly education with lots of resources

Rich vs Poor
Virtually non existence primary sector jobs
• Copper industry in Zambia not making much money not much to invest
• They diversify and start producing stump
• Brazil, Egypt, turkey, china, have 20-50 % in primary industry but descent secondary
manufacturing sector as well anywhere from half to third
• Kind of balanced
• Little bit of everything
• India is focused on primary industry 60% is still farming and mining
• Things change
How handful of countries known as Asian tigers, hong kong signapore, have changed over time,
these countries were undeveloped and poor
