A. Guía de repaso para el Examen 1, narrativa.
Lee esta guía de estudio para el primer examen: La narrativa
1. Estudia los elementos de la narrativa: el cuento y la novela (repasa términos comunes en la narrativa
en el texto (pp. 10-19, o Doc. Adjunto aquí).
2. Repasa todos los cuentos leídos; haz una lista de temas, contextos etc.
3. Revisa los personajes principales, su función en el texto y su simbolismo.
3. Estudia en el texto los diferentes estilos, movimientos literarios y sus períodos: el exemplum, el
naturalismo, el realismo mágico, la Generación del 98, etc.
4. Compara y contrasta los elementos integrantes de la novela y el cuento.
5. Repasa los elementos gramaticales y el vocabulario de cada día (Temario 1, narrativa).
Sugerencia: Estudia tus respuestas a las preguntas de los Enlaces en BB, conceptos teóricos aplicados
a las lecturas, y la definición de términos literarios; conceptos teóricos en el
análisis de cuentos/novela.

3. Breve comentario de texto
4. Microanálisis: elige 2 preguntas.
Textos leídos, Cuentos:
1. Exemplum Medieval, don Juan Manuel (Spain)l: “Lo que aconteció a mozo que casó …”
personajes: Patronio (telling story, giving advice), Count Lucanor (receiving advice),
resumen: There was a boy who was good but poor and a girl who was bad but rich, and
they got married. The boy turned crazy and started asking things (dog, cat, horse, etc.)
to get him water for his hands. He made the woman do it and she was obedient forever.
The boy’s father wanted to do the same thing but it didn’t work on his wife.
temas: If at the beginning you don't show who you are, You will never be able to later,
when you would like to.
2. “Las medias rojas, de Emilia Pardo Bazán (Galicia), Naturalismo
personajes: Ildara (mujer), Tío Claudio (padre de Ildara)
resumen: Ildara’s father catches her wearing red tights and gets mad because he didn’t
give her the money for them, and he hits her and knocks out her tooth and makes her
lose sight in one eye. She was planning on leaving on a boat, but they won’t let her on

3. “La noche boca arriba” de Julio Cortázar (Argentina), realismo mágico/ surrealismo
personajes: narrador sin nombre
resumen: A man is riding his motorcycle when he can’t stop fast enough and slams into
a woman. He goes to the hospital and starts having nightmares about being killed in the
Aztec “guerra florida,” what the Aztecs use to capture humans to sacrifice. At the end, it
appears as though he may actually be about to be sacrificed and is dreaming about the
hospital.

4. “El etnógrafo” de Jorge Luis Borges (Argentina)
personajes: Fred Murdock
resumen: In university, Murdock was advised to study Native American languages and
his professor recommended that he go live amongst the Native Americans. He went, he
took notes for a couple weeks, lived their more relaxed lifestyle. The priest ordered him
to remember his dreams, and he determined that he always dreamed about bison on
nights with full moons. The priest revealed his secret doctrine to him when he heard
about the dreams. He randomly went home, but decided not to publish his findings. Now,
he is a librarian at Yale (ironic).
temas: "The secret, besides, is worth less than the ways that led me to it. These roads
you must have walked."
5. “No oyes ladrar los perros” de Juan Rulfo (México) regionalismo
personajes: Ignacio (boy who is apparently sick), his dad who is carrying him
resumen: Ignacio is sick, and his father is carrying him many miles to Tonaya, where he
thinks he will be able to get treatment. They knew when they heard the dogs barking,
they were there. Ignacio is supposed to be listening for the barking, because his hands
are over his father’s ears. The father admits to Ignacio the only reason he does anything
for him is because of his deceased mother whom he loved. Ignacio dies just as they are
arriving in Tonaya, before he can even get treatment. Father mad because Ignacio
couldn’t even help him at the end.
temas: Life is just one, long, pointless journey (pretty depressing, huh?)
6. “La mujer del juez” de Isabel Allende Realismo (Perú) mágico
