Document Summary

Internal validity: definition: the extent to which research findings are free from contamination by extraneous variables, from the book, we see the example of cheating on a test in large vs small classrooms. But the large class had a mc test and the small class had an essay exam. This has low iv b/c it has contamination- different types of test. External validity: definition: the extent to which it is possible to generalize the results of one study to other populations, settings or times, cheating ex. From above-> can"t apply if study is done in 2 year college to a 4 year college. Better to have ev b/c it can generalize beyond the particular settings in which they appeared. Random assignment: definition: in an experiment, the assignment of the participants to experimental conditions on the basis of chance, flipping a coin or a table of random numbers. Using this helps mitigates the effects of extraneous variables.
