The body maintains homeostasis in various ways ex) temperature: drive: hypothetical, internal state of tension that motivates an organism to engage in activities that should reduce this tension. Drives are unpleasant states of tension that are viewed as disruptions of equilibrium. When individuals experience a drive they are motivated to pursue actions that will leave to drive reduction . Ex) an a on an exam, a juicy steak, a promotion, a monetary prize etc. They argue that natural selection favors behaviors that maximize reproductive success. Ex) dominance is greater in men than women. 1) females may prefer mating with dominant males. 2) dominant males may poach females from subordinate males. 3) dominant males may intimidate male rivals in competition for sexual access. 4) dominant males may acquire more material resources which may increase mating opportunities.
