Helps us understand andersen in the grand scheme of things. He is clearly a romantic author (but he heals with issue that will later be dealt with more directly) Period after romanticism is called modern breakthrough (not andersen) He is unique in dealing with issues of his day. A lot of things were changing in the late half of the 19th century with required evaluation of many common place ideas (culminated in 1870s to a new literary ideal called the modern breakthrough) Scandinavian were few to the deal with the social issues directly in texts. Romantics rebelled against these ideas and had ideas of individualism, subjectivity and poet as innate. In the same way, the modern breakthrough is a reaction to romanticism. Romantics were interested in ruins and fragments (allowed for a certain amount of mystery) This was a direct reaction to what happened in the romanticism. Romantic ideals that nature is alive and world has a soul.
