She goes against gender types: in the western world, we think in bipolar terms (west/east, male/female, hoeg tries to blur these comfortable lines for the reader, smilla and her boyfriend the mechanic . Smilla is female and the mechanic is male, but they go against gender types, making us think about what is normally female/male.
